As poster printers, we love the artwork Marvel Studios utilizes to promote films. There are literally thousands of them, but we narrow our favorites down to a hand full.
Ant-Man
In 2015, Marvel Studios risked past successes with a relatively unproven new character. The promotional movie posters ingeniously showcase a small and comedic Ant-Man dominated by former box office successful characters. In the above poster, we see Ant-Man standing on Thor’s hammer (Mjölnir). The two other posters feature Iron Man’s helmet and Captain America’s shield. This move was a great way to harness the power of the Avenger brand.
Black Panther
Black Panther made quite a splash in his first appearance in Civil War, but the Black Panther film was truly next level in every way imaginable. A remorseful hero, an empathetic villain, an amazing cast, incredible action, and so forth. In the above promotional poster, you can almost feel T’Challa’s despair over his father’s sins, the plight of Wakanda, and the heavy responsibilities of being both the heroic Black Panther and an ethical King.
Captain America: The First Avenger
When Captain America: The First Avenger was in full fledged marketing mode, Marvel released limited edition movie posters illustrated by artist Paolo Rivera. Originally, the “old Hollywood” styled posters were only released to cast and crew, but the run was extended to some lucky giveaway winners at Hero Complex Film Festival (source: EW.com).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
James Gunn and the Guardians of the Galaxy crew are known for introducing 70’s and 80’s themed poster designs. This GOTG2 movie poster is no exception. There is a huge similarity to the popular design for the original Star Wars (Episode 4) movie as you can see here. This makes sense. In many ways, at least in my opinion, Guardians of the Galaxy is the modern day Star Wars with a superior ensemble that is more reminiscent of the original Skywalker trilogy than any of the 21st century Lucas or Abrams films. Sorry JJ.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 deserves further recognition. This black and white poster gave us a first look at baby Groot. But more importantly, the poster references a classic album, Rocket to Russia, by the Ramones. Jame Gunn’s love for the seventies shows front and center with a poster that matches the movie soundtrack.
Avengers: Endgame
Someone at Marvel Studios needs a raise. A month before Avengers: Endgame releases, Marvel drops promotional posters for each character. Many of those posters were dedicated to “Fallen” characters to remind us of the devastating losses that mounted during Infinity War. Thor
Personally, I love the minimalist, yet epic, style of this Thor poster. No huge title or logo, no list of actors, and no side characters. As a result, we observe a strong handsome man embodying the Norse God of Thunder.
Captain America: Civil War
Captain American: Civil War probably has one of the most iconic movie posters of the entire Marvel movie franchise. I felt this image represented the original Civil War comic book series quite well.
Avengers: Endgame
I really wanted to avoid adding posters that simply splashed tons of characters all over it for no apparent reason. This is a common practice with almost every superhero movie out there. But in this case, we had to let it slide. Endgame is a culmination and conclusion to a twenty-two movie collection that deserves an ensemble on the official movie poster.
